K. Bajusz István
Paintings which have scent and this scent evokes feelings and memories in our souls. We can see works which clearly show that they are intended to communicate the feelings and thoughts of their creator, therefore air almost sparkles around them, and this “glamour” - intentionally or unintentionally - seizes the viewer interested.
This effort can be perceived on the works of István Bajusz from Hódmezővásárhely: he intentionally deviates from the well-trodden paths and he sees his own path by building on classic techniques and painter’s tools.
He was born in Földeák in 1953 and he attended primary school there, too; thereafter, he attended the farm school in Igás, but at the end, he completed his primary education in Földeák.
He has actually started dealing with fine arts in the 1970’s, with the assistance of Ferenc Hézső, painter and winner of the Munkácsi Award who still monitors his works to the present day. Currently he lives on a farm in Hódmezővásárhely with his family. The close proximity of nature and the greatness of simple things understandably leaves its marks on the art of István Bajusz. The “human-faceted” nature looks back to us from these works: these creatures “whisper” into our ears about the intimate relationship between man and nature. His works can be characterized by an extraordinary momentum of lines and shapes, their lively rhythms, the pulsing “interconnection” of colours and a living vibration of landscape details. We can almost feel the touch of the wind on our skins, we almost feel the smell of air of those places in our noses, and we almost hear the splat of gently flowing water of the rivers; the atmosphere of the landscape attracts our souls and enchants us. On our skins, we can feel the touch of harmony - so often missing from our pretentious artificial world - when viewing these captured pieces of nature.
The still lifes of István Bajusz are not still lifes in the traditional sense either. They are not only catching but they also warn us about the plenty of beauty and mystery hidden in small and simple things. Each of them carries a message in itself, the finding and interpretation of which is the task of the viewer.
In the background of some pictures we can recognize - light or more vivid - colourful squares which sometimes cover a plane of the picture in a mesh-like way. If we would like to place the painting of István Bajusz into the category of any of the art styles, we could write the following to its label: realism spiced with impressionism, sprinkled with some abstraction.
Putting emphasis on the essence of the theme painted is predominantly typical for the works of István Bajusz. The artist applies the paint onto the canvas in thick layers by dynamic brushstrokes, each and every detail serves the whole. Surfaces consisting of curved paint layers give an intensive dynamism to the pictures, and the colourful squares nourish the unique and rhythmic pulse of the surfaces.
